ILOILO — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 has called on the public to adopt eco-friendly practices this Holy Week, warning that traditional travel, beach outings, and pilgrimage activities could worsen waste generation and strain natural resources if left unchecked.
As thousands flock to beaches, pilgrimage sites, and tourist destinations, DENR-6 stressed that spiritual observance must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility.
In a statement, the agency reminded the public to follow the principle: “Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories.”
DENR-6 said the long weekend should not only be a time for reflection but also an opportunity to protect landscapes that hold cultural and spiritual value.
To curb the environmental impact of the holiday surge, the agency outlined key sustainable practices.
On waste reduction, DENR-6 urged the use of reusable items such as stainless steel water bottles and eco bags to minimize plastic waste.
It also recommended natural decorations, including sampaguita and local ferns, instead of synthetic materials.
The agency reinforced a strict “Leave No Trace” approach, reminding the public to ensure that decorations are free from plastic ribbons or synthetic components and to avoid Styrofoam-based arrangements.
On energy conservation, residents were advised to turn off unused lights and unplug appliances, limit water consumption, and optimize air-conditioning use by setting temperatures between 24°C and 25°C.
For travelers, DENR-6 promoted sustainable transport options, including carpooling, public transportation, walking, and biking to reduce carbon emissions.
“Walk or bike if possible for peaceful, reflective journey,” the department said.
The agency also encouraged the public to practice a “clean as you go” policy in beaches, parks, and pilgrimage areas to prevent litter build-up during peak travel days.
