Concrete actions for sustainable dev’t

TODAY is United Nations Day. It marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
Oct. 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by member states as a public holiday.
This year’s United Nations Day hopes to highlight concrete actions people can take to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Here are some of them, according to the UN:
* Donate what you don’t use; 836 million people live in extreme poverty.
* Avoid throwing away food. Over one-third of world’s food is wasted.
* Vaccinate your family to protect them and improve public health.
* Help children in your community to read.
* Call out sexist language and behavior.
* Avoid wasting water. Water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world’s population.
* Use only energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs.
* Buy from green companies that are equal opportunity employers.
* Think of innovative new ways to repurpose old material.
* Raise your voice against discrimination.
* Bike, walk or use public transportations to keep our cities’ air clean.
* Recycle paper, plastic, glass and aluminum.
* Educate young people on climate change to put them on a sustainable path early on.
* Avoid plastic bags to keep the oceans safe and clean.
* Plant a tree and help protect the environment.
* Use your right to elect the leaders in your country and local community.
Simple steps, right?
These are practical concrete actions we can do. If each of us will do this, the world will become more sustainable.
