Elected and re-elected

TO THE NEW faces in various local government units, welcome to your official tables and swivel chairs.

To those who have been re-elected, the nation prays that you all would be innovative enough to serve your countrymen and find better ways to serve them.

As they say, after three terms any local politician has nothing to prove anymore to his people if he runs for a fourth term.

“The brains of human beings have limitations; serving for nine years productively and effectively is the best that a public servant could deliver to his constituents; more than that is something we do not know,” says a lawyer sipping cappuccino.

“Well, who are we to say that their brains are good for nine years only? Some come-backers are also effective if their circle of advisers is composed of seasoned professionals who could contribute growth to the community,” argues a former judge.

“For as long as the intention is not for power and wealth-harvesting, then any sane politician will remain of service to his constituents. If politicians are serious and sincere in their so-called public service there is nothing to worry about,” stresses a retired banker.

“In some cities, mayors fear barangay officials; we could not comprehend why. Is it because the barangay officials hold the key to the votes in their villages,” asked the former judge.

“We admire mayors who are vocal and face the media for interviews. But there are also coward politicians. They are afraid to talk to the media,” the retired banker quips.

“For new government officials, we pray that they will not be tainted and tempted unlike old politicos whose main thrust is to turn their posts into lucrative business ventures. Some politicos are franchise-holders of food chains,” reveals the lawyer.

“The new faces could also have similar intentions. You see barangay officials improving their lives. Their positions have become their livelihood. They earn a lot during elections,” says a teacher.
