SAN JOSE, Antique – Electricity positively affects the lives of Antiqueños, according to an Antique Electric Cooperative (Anteco) official.
Anteco hopes to put power in the remaining sitios (hamlets) and barangays (villages) that are without electricity.
“We have seen a lot of improvement in rural communities because of electricity,” said Engr. Greg Rufino, head of Anteco’s Institutional Services Division.
“People access information. It has a positive impact on education,” Rufino said. “More important, we see our economy boom due to the stable supply of electricity.”
Anteco covers 16 of the 18 municipalities in Antique. Pandan and Libertad are under the Aklan Electric Cooperative.
Of the 1,280 sitios in the province, 1,194 have electrical connections. Anteco is working to cover the remaining 86 sitios before the year ends.
“We need to sustain these gains and pursue our objective to connect even the farthest communities to the power grid,” said Rufino.
The Anteco official said the Sitio Electrification Program and the Barangay Line Electrification Program remain their thrusts.
Ten far-flung villages are powered by renewable energy sources (solar, mini hydro or generator sets) and thus not connected with the power grid, said Anteco information officer Ruth Ann Fadrigo.
Meanwhile Anteco also supports the National Intensified Household Electrification program, where families who cannot afford the cost of household electricity installation are subsidized by the government through the Department of Energy.
Beneficiaries are entitled to free connection, electric meter, house wiring and installation, and permit from the local government. (PIA/PN)
