MANILA – Sacked Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) administrator Marcial Amaro III said he was not surprised with the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to fire him for alleged excessive travels abroad.
While he did not deny the allegation, Amaro said his dismissal could have something to do with the shipping companies whose operations were derailed under his watch.
“Inaasahan ko na ang pagpapatanggal sa puwesto dahil unang buwan ko pa lang noong Oktubre ay maugong na ang usapang agad akong papalitan,” Amaro said. “Labinsiyam na barko ang nahinto namin ang operation and these are the bigger companies dahil gusto nating ipatupad ang tamang pamamaraan ng pamamalakad ng isang barko.”
Amaro said he was not informed beforehand of his dismissal but only learned it on television during the live press conference of Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Thursday.
According to Roque, President Duterte ordered the dismissal of Amaro after receiving reports that he had travelled 24 times outside of the country — 17 times last year and six in 2016.
“Based on the documents, all of Amaro’s trips were official except for one,” Roque said. “Only three of the trips were sponsored, while the others were paid by the Philippine government.”
“(Amaro) also received an honorarium and other sums for almost all of his trips abroad,” Roque added. “The President has decided, therefore, to terminate his services.”
The dismissal of Amaro came less than a month after Duterte also dismissed Presidential Commission on Urban Poor chairman Terry Ridon and his fellow commissioners for going out of the country seven times./PN
