MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte should consider expanding the martial law to Luzon and Visayas, according to a party-list representative.

According to Shernee Tan (Kusug Tausug), the presence of New People’s Army (NPA) in Luzon and Visayas will justify a nationwide martial law.

“Mr. Speaker, there are still NPA, and they could also make a tax in Luzon and Visayas,” Tan said yesterday.

“I reiterate my stand that martial law should be extended not just in Mindanao but also in Luzon and in Visayas if it serves the best interest of our nation,” he said.

But Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana quickly shot down the notion, saying the presence of the NPA in Luzon and Visayas is “manageable.”

“In Visayas and Luzon, manageable po iyong activities ng CPP-NPA diyan, kaya I don’t think that would be [advisable] to spread or to include Visayas and Luzon in the martial law,” Lorenzana said.

“I think the reason that the NPA in Mindanao are included is because of the intensity kasi po malakas iyong…45 percent of the NPA in the whole Philippines are in Mindanao. And they are creating havoc, especially in eastern Mindanao,” he added./PN
