Farmers, fisherfolk feted with weeklong activities

ILOILO – The Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Office officially opened the Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Week celebration on Tuesday morning, October 1, at the provincial capitol grounds.

The event, which runs from October 1 to 4, 2024, features a range of activities including exhibits, trade fairs, agricultural forums, technology training sessions, and a cooking contest.

Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Ildefonso Toledo emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “This is in recognition of the significant contributions that farmers and fisherfolk make to our community.”

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Sufficient and Modern Technology: Success in Agriculture and Fisheries in Our Province.”

Here is a breakdown of the key activities scheduled for the week:

October 1

* Opening program featuring the launch of various programs, booths, exhibits, and activities related to crops, livestock, fisheries, and agricultural engineering.

October 2

* Orientation on the application of renewable energy in agriculture by the Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering Division.

* Orientation on access to financial institutions for fisheries by the Fisheries Division.

* Lecture on packaging and labeling of fishery-based products by the Fisheries Division.

October 3

* Training on coffee production technology and rice seed nursery preparation and management by the Crops Division.

* Cooking contest featuring the “Best Kinilaw” (Fish and Seaweeds) by the Fisheries Division.

* Seminar titled “Green Grass, Golden Grains: Optimizing Ruminant Production Management and Nutrition”

* Quiz Bee competition.

October 4

* Parade and thanksgiving mass.

* “Kinaadman sang Mangunguma kag Mangingisda” (Farmers and Fisherfolk Got Talent).

* Recognition and awarding ceremony to honor the contributions of farmers and fisherfolk at Passi City Arena, Passi City.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. led the opening ceremony yesterday, accompanied by Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, Board Members Rolito Cajilig, Rolando Distura, Matt Palabrica, and Ramon Sullano, as well as Ajuy Mayor Jett Rojas.

Other key officials present were Department of Agriculture (DA) 6 Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations Zarlina Cuello, P4MP President Patrick John Tobias, and representatives from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6.

The ceremony began with the ribbon-cutting of the exhibits and trade fairs./PN
