MANILA — Far Eastern University tightened its grip on the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball race after overpowering the University of the Philippines in straight sets, 25-13, 25-21, 25-16, to notch its third consecutive victory at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Tamaraws imposed their will from start to finish, combining a balanced offensive attack with steady defense to dominate the Fighting Maroons and climb to solo third place in the standings with a 4-2 record.
Alyssa Devosora spearheaded FEU’s assault with 15 points, while Gerzel Petallo and Clarisse Loresco contributed 12 and 11 markers, respectively, as the Lady Tamaraws continued their strong mid-season surge.
UP, meanwhile, slipped to a 3-2 mark despite the efforts of Negrense Joan Marie Monares, who led the Fighting Maroons with eight points. Niña Ytang and Kianne Olango chipped in six points apiece.
The Fighting Maroons also suffered a scare early in the contest when transferee Casiey Dongallo appeared to hurt her left leg after an awkward landing late in the opening set. She finished the match with four points.
In another match, National University regained its winning momentum after sweeping Ateneo de Manila University, 25-18, 25-18, 25-15.
Evangeline Alinsug powered the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points built on 14 attacks, three blocks, and a service ace, while Arah Panique added 10 markers as NU improved to a 5-1 record.
NU also welcomed back rookie Samantha Cantada, who returned to action after missing the team’s previous game due to a right shin injury she sustained late last month. She tallied six points along with seven excellent receptions and one excellent dig.
The Lady Bulldogs dictated the pace throughout the match, sustaining a relentless offensive rhythm and tight floor coverage that kept Ateneo from mounting any serious challenge.
Rookies Ana Hermosura and Dona Mae de Leon scored seven points each for the Blue Eagles, who remained winless after six matches./PN
