FEU Tams rolls past UE in UAAP basketball

MANILA – Far Eastern University Tamaraws bounced back from opening day loss with an 81-65 victory over the University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

LJ Gonzales flirted with triple-double with 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Tamaraws improved to 1-1 win-loss slate.

The Red Warriors dropped to 0-2.

The Tamaraws surged to an 8-0 start en route to building a double-digit edge. The Red Warriors showed some life in the second but FEU got timely hits to maintain an eight point halftime edge.

In the second half, the Red Warriors tried to keep in step with the Tamaraws. However, Pat Tcuente and Gonzales ended their opponent’s run with baskets of their own as the lead went up to 16 points.

On Saturday night, University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers cruised to solo leadership in the standings following an 85-69 rout of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.

Negrense rookie Mark Nonoy led the Tigers’ rampage as he unloaded 16 points, five rebounds and two assists. Beninese big man Soulemane Chabi Yo posted 18 points, 18 rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block.

Renzo Subido also shot 3-of-6 to wind up with 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Rhenz Abando and Dave Ando got 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Espana side./PN
