MAGNUS Carlsen advanced to the next round of the FIDE World Cup at Krasnaya Polyana in Sochi, Russia, after beating a fighting compatriot in GM Aryan Tari but, the biggest surprise of Round 3 was the surprise elimination of 2nd seed and world number two player Fabiano Caruana, who suffered a shock upset in the hands of Kazakh GM Rinat Jumabayev.
Third seed Shakhriyar Mamedyarov staved off elimination by getting back at GM Haik Martirosyan in hard labor – winning after 85 moves of an English Opening. The duo will play a rapid tiebreak match to determine who advances. The other seeded players given the boot were Yangyi Yu, knocked out by M. Amin Tabatabaei; Jorden van Foreest, who lost to Kacper Piorun; David Navara, ousted by Vasif Durarbayli; Saleh Salem, beaten by Ante Brkic; and Matthias Bluebaum, booted out by Velimir Ivic.
Those who fended elimination and took their matches to rapid tiebreak matches like Mamedyarov were Pavel Ponkratov, Baskaran Adhiban, Jeffery Xiong, and Michal Krasenkow.
