BIÑAN, Laguna – Chinese-Taipei swept the Philippines 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 in the classification round of the 19th AVC Asian Women’s Senior Championship yesterday at the Alonte Sports Arena.

The Filipinas were relegated to a battle-for-seventh-place match against Kazakhstan at the close of the weeklong tournament today.

Chinese-Taipei waxed hot early in the opening set for a 15-6 advantage. The Philippines responded with a rally behind Jaja Santiago to come to as close as 19-23 but their errors allowed the Taiwanese to take the set.

The Philippines made the match close early in the second set and was ahead 13-10 on hits by Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Maika Ortiz. It was a seesaw battle midway until Chinese-Taipei unloaded consecutive points to take a 2-0 set lead.

In the third set, the Filipinas built an 8-2 edge behind Alyssa Valdez and Santiago, but Chinese-Taipei quickly erased this and snatched an 18-17 lead before taking advantage of Philippines’ miscues for a straight-set win.

“For us, it was really a good fight. Sana nabigyan natin ng magandang laban ang Chinese-Taipei,” said Valdez. “Gusto nating manalo, definitely, but kinapos lang din talaga tayo. It’s always a learning experience for the team.”

Valdez finished with 13 points while Santiago and Franchesca Molina combined for 19 markers for the Philippines, which Thailand also swept in the quarterfinals Tuesday night.

Wu Wei Hua top-scored with 14 points while Hsiao Hsiang-Ling and Chen Wan-Ting scored 9 markers apiece for Chinese-Taipei, which will fight Vietnam for the fifth slot./PN
