MANILA — The Philippine Under-17 women’s football team stormed into its third consecutive AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup after unleashing a three-goal second-half assault to crush Bangladesh, 3-0, and complete a flawless qualifying campaign at the Do’stlik Stadium Training Pitch 1 in Uzbekistan.

The young Filipinas secured the top spot in Group H with back-to-back shutout victories, following up their commanding 4-0 demolition of host Uzbekistan on October 5 with another convincing triumph to punch their ticket to the 2027 continental tournament in China.

Noelle Granger delivered the finishing blows with two goals in the closing minutes, while Maya Rose Bascara broke Bangladesh’s stubborn resistance to propel the Philippines toward another milestone in its growing women’s football program.

Despite dominating possession and creating scoring opportunities, the Filipinas encountered stiff resistance from Bangladesh, which held the Philippine attack scoreless for more than 70 minutes.

The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute when Bascara capitalized on a goalmouth scramble following a corner kick, slotting home from close range to give the Philippines a crucial 1-0 advantage.

Bangladesh threatened to equalize six minutes later, but goalkeeper Abigail Garcia produced a decisive one-on-one save against Alpi Akter to preserve the Filipinas’ narrow lead.

Granger then extinguished Bangladesh’s comeback hopes with a devastating late scoring burst.

The young striker doubled the Philippine advantage in the 90th minute after connecting with a perfectly timed through pass from substitute Ariana Gementiza.

Less than a minute later, Granger struck again, converting a long ball from Savannah Chheng to complete her brace and seal the emphatic 3-0 victory.

The two-goal performance capped a remarkable qualifying campaign for Granger, who emerged as the Filipinas’ leading scorer with five goals, including a hat-trick against Uzbekistan.

The Philippines finished the qualifiers with seven goals scored and none conceded, underscoring its offensive firepower and defensive discipline throughout the competition.

Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president John Anthony Gutierrez hailed the achievement as evidence of the sustained progress of the country’s women’s football development program.

“Qualifying once is an achievement. Qualifying three times in a row tells us the work behind this program is sustainable. Each batch of the Filipinas U17 has built on the one before it, and we are proud of every player, staff member, and supporter who made this possible,” Gutierrez said.

He emphasized that the continued success of the youth squad reflects the strengthening pathway from grassroots development to the senior national team.

Gutierrez cited former youth standouts Alexa Pino, Jael Guy, Ariana Markey, Aiselyn Sia, Tea Pidding and Leah Bradley, who have progressed to the senior Filipinas squad.

“Sustainable excellence means a young player can see a path from the U17 team to the senior national team. Alexa, Jael, Ariana, Aiselyn, Tea, and Leah are examples of that path, and they are helping the Filipinas as the senior team pursues a second straight World Cup. We want every new batch to follow them, and we are seeing great potential in the current U17 Filipinas,” he added.

Team manager Selu Lozano likewise praised the collective effort behind the qualification, acknowledging the contributions of the players, coaching staff and supporters, as well as former senior Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic for his guidance during the tournament.

“Credit goes to our players, coaches, staff and everyone who has supported this journey,” Lozano said.

He stressed that the team’s achievement would not alter its broader mission of establishing a sustainable talent development system for Philippine women’s football.

“This result gives us encouragement, but whether we win or lose, our long-term direction remains the same,” he said.

Lozano said the ultimate objective is to develop a steady pipeline of homegrown players capable of competing internationally, with the ambition of fielding a future World Cup squad composed of at least 50 percent locally developed talents alongside elite Filipino players based overseas.

“We want to win today while building something that gives future teams an even better chance,” he said. “We sow now and reap later.”

With their Asian Cup berth secured, the Filipinas U17 will now prepare for the 2027 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup in China in April, where they will seek to translate their perfect qualifying performance into another strong showing against Asia’s top youth football teams.

The tournament draw is scheduled for December 2026./PN
