For tax deficiencies, BIR shuts down another business establishment

ILOILO – Another business establishment was padlocked by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) this province for understating its sales resulting to the underpayment of taxes.

No less than Director Alberto Olasiman of BIR 11 (Panay Island) led the shutdown of DLS Supermart in Barangay Poblacion, Janiuay town and the business’ two other branches in Barangay Tagbak, Jaro, Iloilo City and Pototan, Iloilo recently.

The establishments were closed because their tax declaration was over 30 percent short of the correct sales and they incurred substantial tax payment deficiencies, Olasiman said.

“They have been doing this since 2016,” he said.

Olasiman, however, did not disclose the exact amount of tax deficiency.

Backing up Olasiman was Revenue District Officer Josie Lourdes Tang of BIR Revenue District Office 75 based in Zarraga, Iloilo, operatives of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office and Iloilo City Police Office.

The closure order was signed by Arnel Guballa, BIR revenue deputy commissioner for operations.

Simultaneous tax surveillance was conducted on the establishment’s three branches in September.

“It was conducted within 10 days and our personnel have been monitoring their daily sales,” said Olasiman.

A five-day notice of violation was issued against the establishment on Oct. 9 but it failed to make amends.

On Oct. 26, another 48-hour grace period was given but the establishment yet again failed to act on the violation.

BIR 11 thus recommended to its central office for the closure of the establishment and its two branches.

Tang said they would wait for the owner to pay the tax deficiency before a request for the lifting of the closure order would be filed.

Just this Dec. 13, three branches of the New Ginzu Merchandising located in Iloilo City and the towns of Miag-ao and Pototan in Iloilo province were also padlocked due the tax violations.

Olasiman said the owner already went to the BIR recently and vowed to pay the tax deficiency. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
