Foundation hails initiatives for Iloilo’s PWDs

ILOILO – The Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Inc. (PFRD) is honoring Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. for the initiatives of the provincial government beneficial to persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Defensor would be receiving today the Apolinario Mabini Award at the Kalayaan Hall of Club Filipino in San Juan City, Metro Manila.

PFRD bestows the Apolinario Mabini Award to individuals, groups and agencies with outstanding contributions to the “rehabilitation and empowerment of physically-challenged individuals.”

In a recent letter to Defensor, PFRD president Manuel Agcaoili lauded the governor for supporting the PWDs of Iloilo.

“We would like to reiterate our gratitude for your continued support to help PWDs develop special skills and knowledge…as they take more active involvement in our society,” Agcaoili wrote Defensor.

He also cited the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) under Dr. Neneth Pador.

The PSWDO implements the provincial government’s programs for PWDs. One of these is the college scholarship that each year sends to school 10 PWDs.

The PSWDO also partnered with the Latter Day Saints Charities Foundation for the distribution of 600 wheelchairs and 300 assistive devices for qualified PWD beneficiaries.

Last year, PFRD awarded the provincial government for making Iloilo PWD-friendly.

A nongovernment organization, PFRD was established in 1949. It is “dedicated to the promotion of measures to prevent disability, protect and rehabilitate the disabled and equalize opportunities for disabled persons.”/PN
