FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — France showed championship composure and depth as Les Bleus survived a second-half red card to beat Brazil, 2-1, in a high-intensity international friendly, boosting confidence ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Kylian Mbappe and Hugo Ekitike delivered the goals in either half as Didier Deschamps’ side withstood relentless late pressure from the Selecao despite being reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

France seized control in the 30th minute when Mbappe finished off a superb through ball from Ousmane Dembele. The French captain burst past Brazil’s defense before calmly lifting the ball over goalkeeper Ederson to give Les Bleus the advantage.

Brazil threatened to respond before halftime, with Raphinha and Vinicius Jr. both creating scoring opportunities, but the Selecao failed to convert their chances.

Momentum appeared to swing in Brazil’s favor shortly after the break when France defender Dayot Upamecano was sent off following a VAR review for a foul on Wesley just outside the penalty area.

But even a man down, France doubled their lead through Ekitike. Michael Olise sparked a quick counterattack and set up the forward, who delicately chipped Ederson to make it 2-0.

Brazil finally broke through in the 78th minute as Bremer converted from close range after a well-executed set-piece involving Casemiro and Luiz Henrique.

The Selecao pressed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages, with Bremer and Vinicius Jr. both threatening in stoppage time, but France’s defense held firm to seal the victory.

The win gives France valuable momentum heading into the World Cup buildup, while Brazil will need to sharpen its finishing despite showing flashes of attacking promise./PN
