FROM MARKETPLACES TO MUST-SEE DESTINATIONS: Iloilo City Eyes Tourism Boost for Central, Terminal Markets

ILOILO CITY – This southern city is embracing a global trend by transforming its public markets into vibrant cultural and tourism hubs, following the footsteps of iconic international markets that blend commerce with culture.

Iloilo City’s two largest public markets—the Central Market and Terminal Market—are now being reimagined not just as centers of trade, but as immersive destinations for visitors to experience the flavors, rhythm, and heritage of Ilonggo life.

A key inspiration is Barcelona’s Mercato de la Boqueria, one of the world’s most famous markets. Originally an open-air street market for goat meat and pigs in the 13th century, Boqueria became a formal market in 1840 and has since undergone continuous upgrades. Its now-iconic metal roof, added in 1914, and its art-nouveau entrance on La Rambla have made it an architectural and cultural landmark.

Today, Boqueria Market attracts over 44,000 visitors daily, offering everything from fresh produce and meats to artisanal snacks and prepared meals—making it a must-see destination in Barcelona.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas envisions Iloilo’s own markets following a similar path.

Perspective of the upgraded Iloilo Central Market

“With the ongoing redevelopment of the Central and Terminal Markets, we aim not only to provide better facilities for our vendors and consumers but also to create inviting spaces where tourists can savor the sights, sounds, and tastes of Iloilo,” said Mayor Treñas.

The revitalized markets will feature modern infrastructure, organized stalls, and dedicated areas for local delicacies, agricultural products, and culinary experiences. These efforts align with Iloilo City’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development through culture and food tourism.

In preparation for the markets’ reopening, the Department of Tourism–Western Visayas, in partnership with SM City Iloilo and the Iloilo City Government, will conduct a 7-day Community Tour Guiding Seminar from June 22 to 28, 2025. The seminar will train local tour guides to curate engaging market tours and elevate visitor experiences.

As Iloilo City reimagines its markets, the transformation of Boqueria serves as a compelling model, proving that with thoughtful planning and community engagement, public markets can evolve into world-class tourism landmarks.
