ILOILO City — As part of its 123rd Foundation Anniversary, West Visayas State University (WVSU) proudly presents the musical production “Bayan-Bayanan: Letters from Home” on June 16, 2025, at the WVSU Cultural Center. More than just a showcase of theatrical talent, the event offers multiple benefits that reflect the university’s commitment to arts, culture, and community development.
Foremost, the production serves as a benefit show, with all proceeds going toward the upgrade of the lights and sound system of the WVSU Cultural Center. This improvement ensures that future performances — whether by students, faculty, or guest artists — will be staged with enhanced technical quality, elevating WVSU as a premier cultural venue in Western Visayas.
“Bayan-Bayanan: Letters from Home” is a poignant and powerful musical adaptation of the acclaimed play by Palanca Hall of Famer Bienvenido Noriega Jr. It follows the lives of Filipino migrants living in a cramped boarding house abroad as they confront emotional struggles of homesickness, unfulfilled dreams, and the strength found in shared stories. Rich with original Filipino music and ensemble scenes, the musical gives voice to unspoken love, unsent letters, and the enduring memory of home.
Directed by Dr. Anton Juan, an internationally renowned theater director celebrated for his socially conscious productions, this staging introduces regional audiences to world-class theater direction. It also brings professional-level training and exposure to WVSU talents, especially the cast and crew from TeatroTayo, the University Dance and Cultural Office, and the College of PESCAR.
Produced in collaboration with the WVSU Faculty Association, Inc., the WVSU Federated Alumni Association, Inc., and other university units, the event strengthens institutional unity while enriching cultural appreciation among its stakeholders.
