ILOILO City – In a country where every pasarela turn is replayed, dissected, and celebrated, one walk at the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 coronation night did more than showcase elegance. It ignited one of the most talked-about controversies of the pageant season.
Miss Iloilo City Zestah Shalom Espinosa’s appearance in a white evening gown during Saturday night’s live finals, widely streamed and followed across social media, quickly became a viral talking point not just for its design, but for the story behind it.

What followed was a series of statements that pulled back the curtain on the pressures of national pageantry and the split-second decisions made backstage.
The Miss Iloilo Organization expressed concern over what it described as a last-minute deviation from the approved gown. It said the change was made without prior consultation, resulting in confusion when designer Jo Rubio was credited on-screen for a gown he did not create.
In an industry where designer collaborations are integral to a candidate’s presentation, the organization emphasized that protocols are meant to ensure coordination, professionalism, and proper recognition.
“This situation unfortunately led to confusion and did not reflect the level of preparation and collaboration we strive to uphold,” the organization said.
Espinosa’s camp, however, painted a different picture shaped by uncertainty and time pressure. According to the team, the official gown had not been finalized days before the competition, with only a sketch provided. This prompted the preparation of a backup white gown.
When the official piece reportedly arrived around 5 p.m., some two hours before the pageant started a little past 7 p.m., the team said they were already navigating a highly pressured backstage environment, with additional concerns raised about beadwork in relation to a “strictly no beads” guideline.
The final decision, the camp said, was made collectively. Espinosa chose the gown she felt most confident wearing on stage.
“There was never any intention to disrespect or misrepresent,” the team said, stressing that the move was driven by logistical constraints and the need to ensure the candidate could perform with composure.
As the issue gained traction online, sparking debates on creative credit and candidate autonomy, Espinosa herself broke her silence the following morning.
In a statement posted on May 3, the Miss Iloilo City bet acknowledged the criticism but urged the public to look beyond what is immediately visible.
“Not everything you see or hear online tells everything,” she said, calling for more kindness and understanding.
She also reflected on the emotional weight of her pageant journey, describing the criticism and pressure she carried from the start.
“I stayed quiet, trying to stay strong and hoping that, in the end, things would fall into place,” she said, adding that she now feels “no anger or regret, just acceptance.”
Espinosa also defended her team, emphasizing their loyalty and support throughout her campaign.
“They believed in me when I had nothing, and they stayed when others walked away,” she said.
Despite the controversy, Espinosa finished in the Top 15, a placement that drew support from Ilonggo pageant fans who rallied behind her online.
The Miss Universe Philippines 2026 finals brought together candidates from across the country in swimsuit, evening gown, and question-and-answer rounds, culminating in the selection of the country’s next representative to the international stage. While the pageant celebrated Filipina beauty and advocacy, the Iloilo delegate’s gown issue became one of the most discussed moments of the night.
Both the Miss Iloilo Organization and Espinosa’s camp have called for better coordination moving forward, as the incident highlights the delicate balance between artistry, protocol, and decision-making under pressure on the national stage./PN
