BACOLOD City – The price of pork in Negros Occidental is expected to increase even further as the holiday season draws near.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson noted that the demand for lechon, a popular dish during holiday festivities, typically surges in December.
Despite concerns about hog cholera and African Swine Fever (ASF), he expressed confidence in the steady demand for lechon and the sufficiency of its supply in the region.
Recently, consumers in Negros Occidental have observed a significant rise in pork prices, with costs reaching P350 to P360 per kilogram.
This price hike, according to Dr. Ryan Janoya of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), is not due to a shortage of supply. Instead, it has been attributed to competitive pricing from buyers in neighboring provinces, particularly Panay Island, who are offering higher rates for live pork, leading to increased local prices.
The PVO has assured that the pork supply in December will remain stable throughout the holiday season, despite the current and anticipated price fluctuations. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
