MANILA — Barangay Ginebra San Miguel stamped its class and secured a quarterfinals berth in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup after a commanding 119-107 victory over Titan Ultra Giant Risers Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With the win, the Gin Kings improved to a 7-2 record, strengthening their bid for a twice-to-beat advantage heading into the playoffs behind a balanced offensive assault led by Justin Brownlee and Rhon Jay Abarrientos.
Abarrientos ignited Ginebra’s early surge and finished with 25 points, including four triples and a rare four-point shot, to earn Player of the Game honors. Brownlee delivered a game-high 35 points, while Scottie Thompson and Jeth Troy Rosario chipped in 12 markers each and Stephen Holt added 10.
Ginebra wasted no time asserting control as Abarrientos and Brownlee caught fire from long range, propelling the Kings to a 36-24 first-quarter lead. Titan Ultra, however, refused to fold and trimmed the deficit to eight at halftime behind timely conversions.
The Kings reasserted dominance in the second half, stretching their advantage to as much as 16 points early in the fourth quarter. The Giant Risers attempted to mount a late rally, with Joshua Munzon leading the charge, but Ginebra maintained its composure to seal the win.
Munzon paced Titan Ultra with 20 points, while John Bryan Sajonia added 17. Michael Gilmore, Fran Yu, and Renato Ular contributed 15, 13, and 12 points, respectively, as the Giant Risers dropped to a 2-7 slate.
In the earlier game, Converge FiberXers kept their playoff hopes alive with a dominant 130-103 rout of a shorthanded Phoenix Super LPG squad.
Donovan Smith powered Converge with 32 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks, leading the FiberXers to their second straight win for a 4-6 record. Alec Stockton added 16 points, Justine Baltazar posted a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double, while Juan Gomez de Liaño and Justin Arana scored 13 each.
Ricci Rivero led Phoenix with 26 points, while Jason Perkins and Kenneth Tuffin added 17 and 15, respectively. Will Gozum and Tyler Tio chipped in 10 apiece as the Fuel Masters slipped to 5-4./PN
