MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings drew first blood in its PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-five semifinals against TNT KaTropa with a 121-94 drubbing in Game 1 last night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Justin Brownlee led the way with 21 points while Joe Devance and Greg Slaughter added 19 and 16 points, respectively, to push the defending champions to a 1-0 lead in the race-to-three series.
Also contributing double figures scoring for Kings were Mark Caguioa, who had 13 points all in the final quarter, and LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar and Jervy Cruz, who chipped in 10 markers apiece.
With the score tied at 19-all early in the opening quarter, Kings pulled away with 3-pointers from Devance and inside hits from Brownlee and Slaughter for a 31-22 advantage.
KaTropa tried to keep the game close early in the second but inside hits from Cruz, Brownlee, Aguilar, and Slaughter allowed Kings to maintain a 60-48 distance at the half.
Hits from Brownlee, Devance and Slaughter for Ginebra broke the gap wide open in the second half, and baskets from reserves Aljon Mariano and Juan Paolo Taha allowed Kings to build its largest lead 113-79.
“They beat us up in the elims and we got them (in Game 1),” Kings head coach Tim Cone said, pointing to their 121-92 loss to TNT in the elimination round. “On one hand, we are happy to play like this. On the other, we just filled their bag with motivation.”
Glen Rice Jr. top-scored with 26 points and 10 rebounds while Jayson Castro and rookie Roger Pogoy added 16 and 12, respectively, for KaTropa. Game 2 tomorrow will be in Batangas City./PN
