MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings continued its winning ways in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup after a 105-92 drubbing of Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Import Justin Brownlee scored 24 to help the defending champion tally its fifth straight victory and tie with Meralco Bolts on top with 5-1.
Japeth Aguilar chipped in 19 points while Joe Devance and Gregory Slaughter contributed 14 points apiece for Ginebra, which was gearing up for a huge clash against rival Star Hotshots on Sunday.
After a slim 53-50 lead at the half, Kings pulled away in the third frame behind conversions by Devance and Brownlee for an 85-68 lead at the end of the period Wednesday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Kings’ lead expanded in the fourth quarter behind inside hits by Slaughter and Solomon Mercado to build its largest lead – 23 points – before Fuel Masters came up with late baskets to make the final scores respectable.
“I think that’s pretty much the story of the game, that third quarter right there,” said Kings head coach Tim Cone. “That’s been our kind of an ‘emo’ so far this conference. We played well in the third quarter.”
Import Brandon Brown led Phoenix – now on a seven-game losing skid, 2-7 – with 26 points. Rookie Matthew Wright added 21 markers.
Action resumes today at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City with Kia Picanto taking on Blackwater Elite at 4:15 p.m. and TNT KaTropa facing GlobalPort Batang Pier at 7 p.m./PN
