MANILA – The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings recovered from a slow start to score a 91-67 win over the Star Hotshots in Game 6 of their 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinals series on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Sol Mercado led the way with 21 points, mostly in the second half, for the Kings, which tied the race-to-four semifinals series to 3-3 forcing a do-or-die Game 7 on Tuesday night.

LA Tenorio and Joe Devance added 19 and 14 markers, respectively, while Japeth Aguilar and Jervy Cruz contributed 11 points each for the Kings, which is aiming for its second consecutive PBA title.

The Hotshots opened the match with a 17-6 lead on early triples by Allein Maliksi but the Kings quickly turned things around via consecutive baskets from Tenorio to seize a 25-22 advantage.

Tenorio continued to heat up early in the second frame as the Kings built a 30-22 lead, but the Hotshots leaned on Jean Marc Pingris and Mark Andy Barroca to tie the score at 33-all before taking a slim 39-38 lead at halftime.

Down by five at the start of the second half, the Kings leaned on 10 straight points by Devance to tie the score at 52-all. However, baskets by Mercado and Devance surged the Kings ahead at 62-54 at the end of the period.

The Kings continued its dominance in the fourth as seven straight points by Cruz widened the lead to 71-57. With the Hotshots threatening to within eight, Mercado uncorked consecutive hits to give the Kings its largest lead at 26 on a Raymon Jamito basket.

Pingris finished with double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Barroca added 13 markers for the Hotshots, which failed to rely on star guard Paul Lee anew after being limited to just eight points./PN
