MANILA – Global Cebu historically advanced to the Singapore Cup finals after beating Hougang United 2-1 in the latter’s home stadium in Singapore in the second leg of the semifinals.

Darryl Roberts made a hot streak for the Filipino football squad, scoring all two goals to complete a 4-3 aggregate victory over the tough opponent.

Entering the championship round, Global will be able to surpass the best finish by a Philippine team in the annual tournament – the third place finish of Ceres Negros Football Club in the 2016 edition.

Global – a two-time United Football League champion – will face Albirex Niigata, which scored a 4-2 aggregate win over Home United, in the finals.

Just like in the semis’ first leg, Global was shorthanded on Saturday night, with Misagh Bahadoran, OJ Clarino and Armani Aguinaldo injured. The lineup was further diminished when Dennis Villanueva got ejected for two yellow cards.

Global gained the early lead when Roberts drained one from inside from a cross by Paolo Salenga. But Hougang United responded just before the halftime break with a Pablo Rodriguez long ball hit.

Rodriguez nearly surged Hougang United ahead in the second half with a shot from 30-yards out but this was thwarted by Global goalkeeper Patrick Deyto.

Global regained the lead in the 72nd as Roberts scored on a header from a long pass by Deyto.

Hougang United had chances to force an extension but its last-minute attempts failed.

“We are aware that Hougang United is going all out because it is looking to capture the silverware. Good thing we have prepared hard for them,” said Global head coach Akbar Nawas./PN
