Go beyond basic repairs

THE RESUMPTION of international flights at the Iloilo Airport brings renewed optimism for Iloilo’s economic future. With direct routes to Hong Kong and the upcoming reestablishment of flights to Singapore, the airport is set to reconnect Iloilo with key Asian hubs, facilitating both business and leisure travel. However, these developments raise a critical question: Is Iloilo’s airport infrastructure ready to support sustained growth in international travel?

Airport manager Manuela Luisa Palma and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) have taken steps to prepare Iloilo Airport for increased international traffic with, among others, upgrades to air-conditioning systems and seating capacity in the pre-departure area. These improvements are welcome yet they are just the beginning of what a long-term strategy must entail. Iloilo Airport, a gateway to the Visayas and beyond, must evolve continuously to keep up with both current needs and future demands.

For Iloilo to fully capitalize on its growing connectivity, investment in infrastructure needs to go beyond basic repairs. Expanding the terminal’s capacity to accommodate larger passenger volumes, especially during peak seasons, is a priority. Currently, Gate 3 can hold 150 international passengers, which may be sufficient for the initial surge but could become strained as flights increase in frequency and variety. A second international gate and dedicated areas for immigration and customs processing would streamline operations, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance the traveller experience.

Also, modernizing Iloilo Airport’s technological infrastructure would significantly improve operational efficiency. Introducing automated check-in kiosks, advanced baggage handling systems, and digital information boards would reduce wait times and create a more seamless experience for travellers. These changes, though seemingly minor, align with global airport standards.

Additionally, with more flights comes an increased environmental responsibility. Iloilo Airport should prioritize sustainable practices by exploring eco-friendly waste management solutions and renewable energy sources for its power needs. Iloilo could set an example by creating an airport that balances growth with environmental consciousness.

Securing funding for these expansions and upgrades is a challenge, but one that can be addressed through public-private partnerships (PPPs). Government support, especially in the form of national-level grants or funding programs, would also be invaluable. With such collaborations, Iloilo Airport can be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility that will boost the local economy while enhancing Iloilo’s reputation as a dynamic, forward-looking city.

The return of international flights is a critical milestone, but sustainable airport infrastructure is the foundation that will support Iloilo’s growth in the years to come.
