BACOLOD City – Are they the New People’s Army (NPA) or they are just using the name of the rebel group?
Police advised anyone getting any form of message from people claiming to be NPA rebels to immediately report to them.
“In my own assessment, this is not the work of the NPA,” stressed Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.
Familiaran believes unscrupulous individuals were just using the name of the rebel group to sow fear and panic in others.
He once fell victim to this scheme. A text message sender asked for cell phone load of between P1,000 and P2,000, the vice mayor disclosed.
Immediately report to the police if you get any such message from anyone, Familiaran advised the public.
Superintendent Noel Polines, spokesperson for the Bacolod City Police Office, gave the same advice.
Polines said they have received many complaints from locals getting calls or letters from people claiming to be “NPAs” asking for money.
The complainants — mostly business owners — said they were threatened if they refuse to respond, he said.
Familiaran urged business owners not to give in to the demands of the extortionists.
Anyone who will respond to this scheme without reporting to the police — especially if, say, they send money through a remittance center — will make it hard to catch the fraudsters, stressed Polines.
“This will make it difficult to trace where the money went,” he said.
Entrapments may be conducted if the victims seek help from the authorities, said Polines./PN
