ILOILO – A Provincial Board member wants the Barotac Viejo District Hospital named after former governor Niel Tupas Sr.
Renaming it the “Governor Niel Tupas Sr. Memorial District Hospital” is an acknowledgement of the former governor’s longtime public service, Licurgo Tirador said.
“His integrity as a politician is beyond question,” Tirador said in a privilege speech during the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
According to Tirador, Tupas lasted 38 years in public service because he was “simple, kind and close to the people.”
Tupas was governor of Iloilo for three terms – from June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2010.
He was mayor of Barotac Viejo from Jan. 1, 1972 to June 11, 1978, and representative of the 5th District for 11 years, from June 30, 1987 to June 30, 1998.
Moreover, Tupas was president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines in 1973 and the Western Visayas Municipal Mayors League in 1977.
Tupas died of multiple organ failure due to prostate cancer at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City on Nov. 24, 2015. He was 82.
Tirador hoped his colleagues would support his measure.
Board member Nielo Tupas, son of former governor Tupas, thanked Tirador and their other Provincial Board colleagues supportive of the idea.
“We are very proud as family members,” said the Board member from the 5th District. “As his son, I am proud that people are giving him a tribute for his accomplishments.”/PN
