Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center enhances services for Boholanos

AWARE of its vital role in maintaining the health of the Boholano community, improving their quality of life, and promoting a healthy lifestyle, the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center (GCGMMC) adopts the Performance Governance System (PGS) transformation program, assisted by the Multi-Sector Governance Council.

GCGMMC’s vision is to become a multi-specialty medical center leading in holistic healthcare and patient safety in Central Visayas by 2028. This vision is supported by its mission: to deliver quality, comprehensive, and safe healthcare services to all. Since it’s already 2025, everyone is working toward achieving the goals of this transformation roadmap by 2028: a) Better Health Outcomes, b) Stronger Health Systems, and c) Access to All Levels of Care.

Currently, the hospital provides free drinking water to patients around the clock. It also offers free implants to orthopedic patients with fractures. Prostheses are also provided free of charge, helping patients return to their normal lives. The hospital features a covered walkway on its grounds, designed with a green architecture aesthetic, as the path is illuminated by sunlight during the day. The hospital’s chapel offers a quiet space for reflection and solace, ideal for soul work.

For new services, the hospital offers a mental health clinic for those afflicted with stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, a wound care clinic specializing in the assessment, treatment, and management of wounds which are slow to heal or difficult to treat, a menopause clinic, assisting and helping women understand and cope with the changes in their bodies that affect their physical, mental, and emotional well-being, a memory evaluation clinic for the elderly or anyone who experiences memory worries and needs through assessment for better diagnosis and treatment, and nuclear medicine, which involves ingesting radioactive iodine to determine, diagnose, and treat diseases.

In December 2024, Miguelito “Mike” S. Jayoma, MD, FPSGS, FPCS, MHM, was officially appointed as Medical Center Chief II. Following his installation, he took decisive steps to advance the programs envisioned by the medical center, aiming to enhance the hospital’s performance.

In a conversation with Dr. Jayoma, he highlighted his leadership principle that aptly focuses on organizational perspective and empathy. He explained that these principles are easier said than done. “Having been a leader for twenty-five years and serving as the chief of hospital in four different health institutions, I often reflect on how people perceive me and how people talk about me,” he said.

“To be a leader at the top requires resetting one’s mindset and adopting a broader perspective. This is because I am no longer managing people in technical, supervisory, or managerial roles. Today, I am leading the executive committee—leaders of large departments, each with a distinct perspective and leadership style. I must acknowledge that I am now a leader of leaders—someone who motivates and inspires. This means I must be open-minded and not biased,” he stressed.

In meetings where disagreements arise, his role is to facilitate agreement amidst the disagreements. “My role is to listen, to withhold my opinion until I’ve heard theirs, and in doing so, I communicate that I value their leadership. However, leadership also requires knowing how to say ‘no’ in a respectful, indirect way, and not saying ‘yes’ without first weighing the opinions of other leaders.”

Dr. Mike emphasized that empathy is a Christian value that is innate to Filipinos. “From empathy, kindness naturally flows. More importantly, empathy is a trait that we in the healthcare industry inherently possess. The challenge is how to sustain it as we climb the ladder of success. That’s why I choose empathy as a core value, so I can always return to it and be reminded of its essence.”

“We must be leaders who inspire and who encourage others to inspire each other. The empathy we extend to our employees will always create a ripple effect, touching lives far beyond our immediate reach,” Dr. Jayoma concluded.

At GCGMMC, the challenge is to deliver quality healthcare services that translate, even better, transcend their core values of kindness, relevance, and inclusiveness. These are the backbone of their service, an accountability to their Boholano patients, clients, and stakeholders, and a promise to the Boholano community.
