MANILA – Government agencies are working very hard to “upgrade” the Philippines’ transportation system, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said on Tuesday.
According to the Chief Executive, agencies such as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) are working together to develop and implement transportation projects that will meet the needs of the public.
“While we have not yet reached the point of seamless smart transportation, we are not standing still either,” Marcos said during the Indo-Pacific Business Forum in Taguig City.
The government has a wide range of programs and projects underway, all aimed at making transport systems more efficient and cities smarter, the Chief Executive added.
President Marcos said the government recognizes the crucial role that transportation plays in the country’s socio-economic development.
“At the heart of this effort is our National Transport Policy. This policy is about enabling inclusive and sustainable growth and helping us achieve our broader national goals,” said Marcos.
The government, he stressed, is “investing in everything from roads and railways to ports [and] airports, all intending to create a transport network that is safe, efficient, and accessible to everyone. Such are the lessons learned from the pandemic.”
“We are also embracing new technologies to make our transport systems smarter [and] more responsive to changing needs,” the Chief Executive further said.
According to the President, there is a long way to go, but his administration is committed to making the Philippines a leader in “smart and sustainable transportation.”/PN
