MANILA – Former collegiate rivals Michelle Gumabao and Denise Lazaro are set to team up to banner the United Volleyball Club team in the upcoming Philippine Superliga season.
According to United VC team manager Joshua Ylaya, the team will be composed of former De La Salle University Lady Spikers and Ateneo Lady Eagles players aside from their recruits Angeli Tabaquero and Erika Alkuino.
“These players want the sport to grow. That’s the reason why they agreed to elevate the game of volleyball,” Ylaya said. “These players believe in our vision and they trusted us when we told them that we will take care of them and fight for them.”
“We called this team ‘United’ because we wanted to show that we can be together in one team despite playing in rival teams in the past,” he added. “At the end of the day naman, it’s just one sport we all love and we can play competitively together.”
Aside from the four mentioned, other players set to join the team are former Lady Eagles’ Amy Ahomiro, Mae Tajima and Jamenea Ferrer, as well as former Lady Spikers’ Wensh Tiu.
“They’re friends naman outside the court, syempre on the court it’s all business, but now that they’re in one team it will be a fresh start for everyone,” said Ylaya, who previously played for the DLSU men’s volleyball team./PN
