MANILA – Olympic-bound Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo took home two bronze medals during the 2020 All-Japan Gymnastics Championships in Takasaki in Japan on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Yulo settled for third place in the floor final with a 15.200 behind Minami Kazuki of Sendai University (15.600) and Doi Ryosuke of Nippon Sport Science University (15.300).
Yulo, a member of Asahi Seimei club, also grabbed the bronze with his 14.866 points. Yonekura Hidenobu of Tokushukai GC scored 15.133 and Asato Keisuke of Sogo Gymnastics got 15.083.
Yulo, currently the world’s No. 1 gymnast in men’s floor exercise, failed to clinch a medal in men’s all-around as his 170.032 points was just good for rank eight in the event.
The twin bronze medal finishes of Yulo was a follow up to his bronze medal finish during the 53rd All-Japan Seniors Gymnastics Championships in Gunma last September.
The Malate, Manila-native Yulo is currently training in Japan in preparation for his competition in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he hopes to become the first Filipino to deliver a gold medal.
Yulo was one of the four Filipino athletes who have earned a qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics slated later this month aside from Ilongga Irish Magno and Eumir Marcial of boxing and pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena.
Yulo earned the Summer Olympics qualification following his gold medal finish in the floor exercise category of the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart./PN
