SAN JOSE, Antique – Barangays must have help desks addressing incidents of violence against women and children and these must be open round the clock, according to a member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Antique.
Antique has 590 barangays but data on the number of them with the help desks was not available.
“The desks must be functional, open for 24 hours. They can raise public consciousness on women and children’s rights, and prevent all forms of violence against them,” said SP member Egidio Elio.
Elio is the chairperson of the SP committee on family, women and children. He said a local ordinance may help barangay officials address the need to set up Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) desks.
He observed that despite the Magna Carta of Women and existing related local ordinances there are still challenges in the protection of women and children’s rights, especially at the barangay level.
Meanwhile, Elio said a mission dubbed “Tabang Antiqueño” will be conducted on June 2017 to deliver charitable health care services especially for the women sector.
The medical team from University of Santo Tomas will conduct special programs for women with breast cancer, tumor and other gynecological problems. (PIA-Antique/PN)
