ILOILO City – You better watch out. Holiday season opportunists are coming to town.

The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) urged shoppers to be vigilant.

Among those the public should be watchful of are sweet-talking swindlers (budol-budol), said Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, regional police director.

He had a practical advice: don’t talk to strangers.

Gentiles also discouraged shoppers from putting their valuables such as wallets and cellphones in the back pockets of their trousers where snatchers and pickpockets can easily access them.

“We also advise them to secure their handbags,” added Gentiles.

The PRO-6 will be deploying policemen in crowded areas such as shopping centers and transport terminals this holiday season.

“Your being cautious can help reduce the chance of you being victimized by lawless elements. Secure your electronic gadgets, cash and jewelry when shopping,” said Gentiles.

The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) issued the same warning.

“We know these lawless elements take advantage of the holiday season. Dapat prepared tayo,” said Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso, city police director.

Before leaving the house, homeowners must make sure their gates, doors and windows are securely locked, said Canieso.

The ICPO will be deploying more police officers to places where many people converge – malls, seaports, churches, and the downtown area.

More police officers will be doing field work instead of performing administrative duties inside police stations, said Canieso./PN
