MANILA – The House of Representatives on Thursday has issued a subpoena for Ilocos Norte governor Imee Marcos to attend a hearing on the alleged misuse of her provincial government’s tobacco funds.

Marcos may be slapped with a contempt charge if she fails to attend the July 25 hearing, according to Rep. Johnny Pimentel (Surigao del Sur), good government and public accountability committee chairman.

“You are hereby directed to appear before the Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability of the House of Representatives to testify under oath relative to the subject matter under inquiry,” read part of the subpoena.

Former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. may also be charged with contempt for instructing his sister not to attend the inquiry, said Pimentel.

Governor Marcos earlier said she will skip the hearing even if a subpoena is issued for fear of arrest. She previously failed to attend the inquiry initiated by Majority Leader Rudy Fariñas.

Fariñas had six Ilocos Norte officials detained for failing to respond to questions during the House inquiry. The House also refused to comply with the Court of Appeals’ grant of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus and order to release the officials detained since May 29.

Fariñas alleged that about P66.45 million in tobacco funds were used to purchase minicabs, buses and mini trucks for various Ilocos Norte towns despite a law stating that excise taxes should be used for livelihood and infrastructure projects benefitting tobacco farmers./PN
