ILOILO City – A major government housing project in Iloilo City has significantly expanded its capacity to benefit more low-income families after officials increased the number of units from 234 to 362, backed by over P640 million already released to jumpstart full implementation.
Mayor Raisa Treñas said the expansion was made possible by upgrading the building design from five to seven storeys, allowing more housing units within the same project footprint.
“Maayo nga balita ini para sa aton siyudad. Mas madamo pa gid nga pamilya ang mahatagan sang safe, decent, kag affordable nga puluy-an,” Treñas said.
Each unit will have an estimated floor area of 27 square meters, aimed at providing livable and affordable housing for low-income families in the city.
The Iloilo Residences Rental Housing Project is part of the national government’s Expanded Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Program (4PH), implemented in partnership with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the Iloilo City Government.
Treñas underscored that the expansion reflects the city’s intensified push to address the growing housing backlog and improve access to decent shelter.
The DHSUD has already released more than P640 million in escrow funds, clearing a major hurdle for the project’s rollout.
The housing development will rise on a 13,080-square-meter city-owned property in Barangay Sambag, Jaro district, and is designed as a multi-phase socialized housing initiative under the government’s flagship housing program.
City officials said they are now awaiting final approval of architectural and engineering designs before construction fully ramps up.
Treñas expressed confidence that the project will meet its target completion timeline and deliver much-needed housing units to Ilonggo families.
“Gina-target naton nga matapos ini antes magtapos ang 2027, kag ginahulat na lang naton ang final approved designs agud masuguran ang full implementation,” she said.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly boost the city’s housing inventory and provide more secure and affordable living spaces for families in need./PN
