How to tell your boss about your job offer

EVERYTHING is so fluid these days that survival means being able to adapt to whatever life throws at you. Whether it means working remotely, running a small business from home, or shifting careers, we find that keeping body and soul (and mind!) together depends on how quickly we acclimatize to new circumstances.  Of course, this includes conquering fears.

When it comes to job options, one of the more challenging tasks is telling your boss that you scored a job offer.

How do you tell your boss? Should you even bother?

Letting your boss know about your plans can be a powerful negotiating position. It could end with what you want – a salary increase, a promotion, and maybe the option to work from home.   Before the big talk, here are a few questions to ask yourself.

What’s missing in my current role/job? (Is it a flashier title? A better work-life balance? Pay commensurate to my efforts?)

What do I want? (Am I OK with a slightly lower pay but with less stress? Am I ok with the longer travel distance to this new job? Do I want a different work culture? If I’m offered a raise, how much am I happy with to stay?)

If I bring this up to my boss, does she/he have the authority to make a decision (give me a higher pay) or will this issue have to go up the line?

Am I indispensable in my current role? (Many employees are deciding to jump ship because many companies are hiring. Will my role give me some leverage to negotiate on a pay increase?)

Only then do you set an appointment (at a time convenient for the boss). Begin by mentioning that you are considering a job at this company for so and so reasons.

If you can be convinced to stay, say “I value the experience in this company, and I love what I do, but a pay increase is a huge priority for me at the moment.” Take it from there and see if you can negotiate.

If you are leaning towards what you feel is a better opportunity, mention your reasons. If a work-life balance is a priority, mention it. Pay isn’t everything and business owners know that the pandemic has worn out even the best of us.

Know that all requests come with risks. Your boss could call your bluff and you just might find yourself stuck in that job (or stuck without one!). Evaluate all possible outcomes and be prepared to leave. Many managers are sensitive when outside offers are mentioned. They feel betrayed to a certain extent. But to others, it is also a wake-up call especially when their employees are leaving in droves.

In many instances, however, it is simply time to go. A lot of managers don’t have the authority to change your pay so keep it simple. Leave out the drama and the animosity. Keep your eye on the bigger picture. You are leaving your comfort zone, and whatever lies beyond will be a learning experience. Successful or otherwise, the new experience is a networking opportunity.  It’s a great chance at enriching your professional experience, as well.
