Hypertensive cardiovascular disease Iloilo’s top killer in 2020; Practice healthy lifestyle – PHO

ILOILO – A total of 1,950 residents of this province succumbed to hypertensive cardiovascular disease last year.

Based on the data released by the Provincial Health Office, hypertensive cardiovascular disease was No. 1 in the Top 10 mortality in the province, followed by pneumonia with 1,337 fatalities.

Here are the others:

* cancer (all forms) – 649

* undetermined cause of death – 591

* diabetes mellitus – 406

* accident (all forms) – 306

* pulmonary tuberculosis – 256

* kidney diseases – 243

* cerebrovascular accident – 193

* liver diseases – 185

Overall, 6,116 Ilonggos died last year due to the abovementioned diseases.  

As to the morbidity or conditions often consulted to the Rural Health Units, hospitals and other health facilities, acute respiratory infections (ARI) in all ages topped the list with 13,798.

Also in the Top 10 were:

* animal bites – 9,864

* hypertension – 7,418

* urinary tract infection – 5,778

* pneumonia – 4,706

* influenza-like illness – 3,412

* skin diseases – 3,382

* tuberculosis (all forms) – 3,045

* heart disease – 1,026

* acute lower respiratory tract infection – 934

A total of 53,363 Ilonggos died due to these morbidities.

Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, acting chief of the PHO, has thus advised residents to always practice a healthy lifestyle.

“Exercise, less fat, alcohol and salt intake,” said Quiñon. “Please don’t forget to drink your maintenance medications, manage your stress, stop smoking, and pray.”

She added that the public should immediately seek medical attention from their nearest health facilities when they feel something unusual./PN
