ICPO steps up effort vs ‘akyat bahay’ gangs

ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) is taking extra effort to catch akyat bahay robbers this summer season.

ICPO spokeswoman Captain Shella Mae Sangrines said robbers are taking advantage of summer, when most families are on beach trips, leaving no one to keep an eye on their houses.

Sangrines added that the ICPO have been deploying its personnel since last month to spoil the operations of these lawless elements.

“While Iloilo City is peaceful, we are still stepping up our campaign against criminals,” stressed Sangrines. “We are mindful that they will strike anytime there’s an opportunity.”

She added that they tapped village officials and watchmen in subdivisions, which are usually the target of akyat bahay gangs.

The ICPO also have intelligence personnel who work closely with the community to prevent robberies.

“We have intensified police operations and coordination with the community to help curb criminality. We also want to prevent petty crimes like snatching and pickpockets,” Sangrines said.

The ICPO is also urging subdivisions, business buildings, banks, and even schools to install closed-circuit television cameras.

These will help deter any crimes and identify criminals, Sangrines said.

But the ICPO spokeswoman still reminded homeowners to lock their house and secure their important belongings before leaving their houses./PN
