ILOILO – Bet collectors or agents of illegal numbers games have found a way to elude police detection and arrest. They now get the bettors’ numbers using cellphones.
Instead of writing down the bettors’ chosen numbers on cotejos (bet stubs), the collectors “text” the numbers to their remittance office, a source told Panay News.
“Texting has done away with the paperwork and this hastens their transaction,” the source said.
The use of the mobile phone’s short messaging system also reduces the chances of the collectors being caught, the source added.
“Through this new style wala sang ebedensya or gambling paraphernalia nga makita. What they only have is money,” said the source.
New gambling lords started operating in the province three weeks ago, Panay News learned. A former mayor is one of the financiers in northern Iloilo while a municipal councilor is raking in money from the illegal activity in the 2nd District.
Recent police operations netted illegal gambling bet collectors but the suspects were using bet stubs and pens. According to the source, these were the collectors of the “old” gambling lords.
“Ang ginadakop subong mga tawo ina sang old gambling operators to show nga may dakop man sila. Ang bet collectors sang bag-o nga mga gambling operators wala ginadakop. That’s the real situation,” the source told Panay News.
The new gambling financiers enjoy protection from a top police official at the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) who gets a five percent share from the proceeds of the illegal activity.
This police official ordered his men to go after the “old” gambling financiers after his demand for a share from proceeds of their operations and P1-million “goodwill” money from each of them were rejected, the source revealed.
The point man of this top Camp Delgado official is a cop with the rank of Senior Inspector and connected with the PRO-6’s Regional Special Operations Unit, added the source./PN
