ILOILO City – The Iloilo International Airport and three other Philippine terminals made it again to the list of the 25 best airports in Asia for 2017.
According to the travel website Sleeping in Airports, the Iloilo International Airport ranked 12th in a recent survey the results of which were released just this Oct. 15 – two days after an aircraft overshot the airport runway in Cabatuan, Iloilo on Oct. 13.
Sleeping in Airports asked travelers to rate airports in Asia based on their overall airport experience taking into consideration the following:
- comfort (gate seating and availability of rest zones)
-
services, facilities and things to do
-
food options
-
immigration / security
-
customer service
-
cleanliness
-
navigation and ease of transit
-
sleepability
The Iloilo airport also ranked 12th in last year’s survey and 21st in 2015.
Aside from domestic flights, the airport also services regular flights to Hong Kong and Singapore.
The Iloilo airport is the first in both Western Visayas and island of Panay to be built to international standards. It can support aircrafts as large as the Airbus A321, Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Boeing 757, Boeing 767, and Boeing 787.
Runway lights and an Instrument Landing System were installed, making the airport capable of supporting low-visibility and night landings under any weather condition.
The other Philippine airports that made it to this year’s top 25 were the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (13th), Davao Francisco Bangoy International Airport (17th), and Clark International Airport (22nd).
Singapore’s Changi International Airport was Asia’s best for 2017 followed by Incheon International Airport (South Korea), Tokyo International Airport (Japan), Hong Kong International Airport, and Narita International Airport (Japan).
The Iloilo airport opened its doors to commercial traffic on June 14, 2007 after a decade of planning and construction, replacing Mandurriao Airport in Iloilo City which had been in service for over 70 years.
The airport complex consists of a single runway (2,500 meters long, 45 meters wide), various administrative and maintenance buildings, waste-sorting and water-treatment facilities, a power-generating station, a cargo terminal, and a main passenger terminal.
Built in slightly over 30 months, the airport’s architectural style is reminiscent of Hong Kong International Airport, albeit on a smaller scale. It is divided into three levels: arrivals and baggage claim, check-in, and departures.
The terminal is equipped with x-ray machines as well as escalators and staircases for departing and arriving passengers. There are also two elevators.
It also makes extensive use of natural lighting, designed for energy efficiency./PN
