ILOILO City – This city has earned international recognition after being included in a list of 20 cities worldwide cited for their strong push toward sustainable waste management, according to a United Nations (UN)-backed initiative.
The distinction was announced ahead yesterday’s observance of the International Day of Zero Waste, with the city joining global counterparts acknowledged for adopting innovative strategies that minimize waste and promote circular economy practices.
The initiative, spearheaded by the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Zero Waste with support from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), highlights urban centers that are making significant strides in building environmentally resilient and inclusive communities.
Iloilo City stands alongside other selected cities across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas that have demonstrated measurable progress in reducing waste generation, improving recycling systems, and strengthening community participation in sustainability programs.
Urban sustainability advocates noted that cities included in the list serve as models for others, particularly in integrating waste reduction into broader climate and development goals.
Local officials have previously emphasized Iloilo City’s ongoing programs on solid waste management, including segregation at source, community-based recycling initiatives, and partnerships with stakeholders aimed at reducing landfill dependence.
