ILOILO City – Fresh from winning the Galing Pook Award, this southern city won gold in the Wheels for Work X Bike Lane Awards in celebration of the National Bicycle Day yesterday.

The city government was cited for its exemplary promotion of active transport.

It bested the cities of Quezon and Mandaue, Cebu that took home the silver and bronze, respectively.

Iloilo City beat the cities of Pasig and Quezon in the inaugural awards last year.

Just recently, the city government’s I-BIKE Program promoting bike culture was hailed a Galing Pook awardee.

“By strengthening a bike-friendly metropolis, we are sustaining the momentum in pedaling towards progress being embraced by both locals and visitors,” Mayor Jerry Treñas stressed.

The awards acknowledged the accomplishments of local government units (LGUs) and showcase their innovative practices and interventions.

Given by the Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Transportation, Department of Public Works and Highways, and Department of Health, the awards aim to recognize LGUs that best utilize the efficiency and effectiveness of bike lanes.

Anchored on a more sustainable and inclusive transport system, the awards also promote road safety for all road users, as well as share innovative practices to improve active transport infrastructure as an example to other LGUs.

This is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1052, s. 2020 declaring the fourth Sunday of November every year as “National Bicycle Day” in the Philippines to highlight the importance of non-motorized transportation./PN
