ILOILO City – The excitement surrounding the 2027 Dinagyang Festival is set to build as Iloilo City officially launches its 100-day countdown today, October 24, at SM City Iloilo, offering the public an early glimpse of the participating tribes and signaling the start of preparations for one of the country’s grandest cultural and religious celebrations.
Organized by the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI), the countdown celebration will feature cultural performances, entertainment and previews of the competing tribes ahead of the festival’s main events scheduled for January 22 to 24, 2027.
The kickoff is expected to generate excitement among Ilonggos and tourists as the city gears up for another edition of its internationally recognized festival, celebrated in honor of the Señor Santo Niño (Child Jesus).
A major highlight of the countdown will be the introduction of the nine tribes vying for the championship in the 2027 Dinagyang Tribes Competition.
These are Tribu Pan-ay, Tribu Villahanon, Tribu Paghidaet, Tribu Salognon, Tribu Bola-Bola, Tribu Ilonganon, Tribu Silak, Tribu Taga-Baryo and Tribu Hugyaw.
Antique’s Binirayan Festival will also return as a non-competing contingent, bringing the total number of participating tribes to 10.
The participating tribes are expected to showcase their preparations for the January showdown, which will feature elaborate costumes, synchronized choreography, powerful drumbeats and performances highlighting Iloilo’s cultural heritage and religious devotion.
Meanwhile, IFFI has identified five judging areas for the 2027 competition, signaling the return of the festival’s major performances to the heart of Iloilo City.
These are the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo Provincial Capitol, Quezon-Ledesma Street, Mabini-De Leon Street, and Iznart Street, all in the City Proper district.
The arrangement marks a shift from the previous festival setup, which extended competition activities to the Iloilo Sports Complex in La Paz district.
The return to the downtown district is expected to bring the festival’s signature street-dancing spectacle back to its traditional urban setting.
Beyond showcasing the participating tribes, the October 24 countdown will serve as a platform to drum up public interest and anticipation for the January festivities.
Dinagyang remains a major tourism and economic event for Iloilo City, attracting local and international visitors while generating business opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transportation operators, vendors and other enterprises.
The festival also provides a platform for promoting Iloilo’s cultural identity, religious traditions and hospitality.
Just recently, Dinagyang emerged as the country’s best cultural tourism festival, leading a five-award haul for the city at the 2026 Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) Pearl Awards, where its achievements in heritage preservation, tourism promotions, local products and event hosting also earned national recognition.
Dinagyang Festival 2025 was declared champion in the Best Tourism Event: Cultural Festival category.
The festival, which carried the theme “Buhi nga Pagtuo sa Kinabuhi sang mga Ilonggo,” earned the distinction for its celebration of religious devotion, cultural traditions and the enduring faith of the Ilonggo people.
The national recognition further cemented Dinagyang’s standing as one of Iloilo City’s most important tourism attractions and a major showcase of its cultural identity./PN
