ILOILO – On June 2, this province recorded 168 new infections and eight deaths due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
This was record-breaking, said Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, acting head of the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
This was the all-time single day high in new cases and deaths due to COVID since the onset of the pandemic, she noted.
The new cases were traced to the towns of Leganes (19), Oton (17), Pavia (15), Passi City (14), Bingawan (13), Lambunao (10), Alimodian (seven), Dumangas (six), Sara (six), and Zarraga (five).
PHO record also showed that of the new cases, 162 were local cases, returning overseas Filipinos (three), Authorized Persons Outside Residence (one) and locally stranded individuals (two).
On May 30, this province recorded 147 cases; 144 infections on June 1; and 133 on May 28.
Meanwhile, the eight deaths recorded were:
* 46-year-old, male from Oton
* 61-year-old, female from Leon
* 56-year-old, male from Pavia
* 57-year-old, male from Pavia
* 74-year-old, male from Pavia
* 77-year-old, female from Miag-ao
* 58-year-old, male from Alimodian
* 73-year-old, male from San Miguel
Data suggested that three out of these deaths came from Pavia.
As of June 2, the province had 8,108 total confirmed coronavirus cases – 1,558 active, 6,352 recoveries and 198 deaths.
Of the total fatalities, 118 had comorbidities.
Most COVID deaths came from Pavia with 20, Oton (15), Barotac Nuevo (14), Santa Barbara (10), Banate (nine), Leganes (nine), Cabatuan (eight), Pototan (eight), Passi City (seven), San Miguel (seven), and Estancia (six).
“I hope every Ilonggo should not take COVID-19 lightly. It kills. In fact, it already killed more than 3.5 million people in the world,” stressed Quiñon.
She added: “Based on regional (Western Visayas) data, there are 128 residents of Iloilo province who were in critical condition and two were severe cases.”
Quiñon has thus enjoined the public to continue observing the 3Ms strategy – Magmaskara, Magdistansya, Manghinaw – against COVID-19./PN
