ILOILO City – The League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP)–Iloilo Chapter has expressed concern over controversial remarks made by Quezon City 4th District’s Rep. Bong Suntay during a recent hearing at the House of Representatives, saying the statements were widely viewed as inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards expected of public officials.
In a statement, the organization representing municipal mayors across Iloilo province stressed that leaders in government are expected to observe respect and professionalism, particularly when speaking in official proceedings.
The reaction came after Suntay drew criticism during a House Committee on Justice hearing tackling impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte. During the discussion, the congressman cited a personal anecdote involving actress Anne Curtis while arguing that thoughts or imagination alone should not be treated as punishable acts.
His remarks quickly circulated on social media and drew negative reactions from several lawmakers and women’s rights advocates, who described the statements as sexist and unsuitable for a legislative forum. The issue was later referred to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges for review.
The LMP Iloilo said the issue is particularly sensitive as the country is observing National Women’s Month, which highlights the role of women in society and reinforces the government’s commitment to protecting their rights and dignity.
Municipal leaders in Iloilo noted that local governments across the province have long supported Gender and Development programs that promote women’s welfare, address harassment and discrimination, and encourage respectful communities.
The group emphasized that accountability remains an essential element of public service, adding that maintaining public trust requires officials to exercise responsibility and prudence in their statements.
