Iloilo, Negros continue winning run in PCAP

MANILA – Iloilo Kisela Knights and Negros Kingsmen widened their winning run further in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines Third Conference with a sweep of their Wednesday night assignments.

The Kisela Knights opened the evening with a 17-4 domination of Cebu before following it up with a 15-6 beating of PCL Pagadian to stay on top of Southern Division standings with a 9-1 slate.

Iloilo had a 7-0 score over Cebu in the blitz behind full points by Rolly Parondo (Board 1), Karl Victor Ochoa (Board 2), Cherry Ann Mejia (Board 3), Cesar Mariano (Board 4), Fritz Porras (Board 5), Mark Mariano (Board 6), and Horizon Villanueva (Board 7).

The Kisela Knights, however, settled for a 10-4 score against the Cebuanos in the rapid event with only Parondo, Ochoa, Mejia, Porras, and Mark Mariano capturing the full two points.

Facing the PCL Pagadian, the Kisela Knights scored a 5-2 blitz victory with full points by Ochoa, Cesar Mariano, Porras and Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem (Board 6) and half points by Parondo and Mejia.

Parondo, Ochoa, Mejia, Cesar Mariano and Porras, meanwhile, completed their domination over PCL Pagadian in the rapid event. They all garnered the full two points in the said category.

The Kingsmen, on the other hand, stayed at second place in the Southern Division standings at 8-2 after scoring a 19-2 annihilation of Cagayan de Oro and a 15.5-5.5 beating of Cebu.

David Elorta (Board 1), Ellan Asuela (Board 2), Adelaide Lim (Board 3), Edsel Montoya (Board 5) and Rolzon Roullo (Board 7) notched full points each as Negros edged Cagayan de Oro in blitz game, 5-2.

The five scorers in the blitz event along with Board 4 and Board 6 players Edmundo Gatus and Alfredo Dumalag got two points apiece as the Negrenses walloped Cagayan de Oro in the rapid game, 14-0.

The Kingsmen barely escaped Cebu in the blitz game, 4.5-2.5, behind full point by Elorta, Joel Pimentel (Board 2), Montoya and Dumalag and half point from Gatus.

In the rapid event, the Negrenses leaned on two-pointers by Elorta, Pimentel, Lim and Montoya and one-point each by Gatus, Dumalag and Roullo for a 11-4 beating of the Cebuanos./PN
