MANILA – The Ilongga pair Dhannylaine Demontaño and Jackie Estoquia reached the semifinals of the Beach Volleyball Republic International Santa Ana Open on Sunday in Santa Ana, Cagayan.
Demontaño and Estoquia defeated Singapore’s Kelly Sim Son Shwu Yuen and Huang Zihui 21-16, 21-16 in the knockout match.
Opening their campaign on Saturday with a 21-12, 15-21, 15-7 win over Yuen and Huang, Demontaño and Estoquia later suffered a 13-21, 19-21 loss to semifinals-bound Davao’s Lot Catubag and Karen Quilario.
Negrense Bea Tan and Charo Soriano of Team Tuguegarao, meanwhile, advanced to the semifinals with victories over Singapore’s Tin Lai Ng and Tan Shiang Theng (22-20, 21-15) and Far Eastern University’s MJ Ebro and Ivana Agudo (21-14, 21-16).
The other semifinals seat was taken by Harbor Pilot-Cebu’s Therese Ramas and Dij Gutierrez, who made a quick work of Ebro and Agudo 21-7, 21-11 and Ng and Theng 21-15, 21-13.
In the men’s division, Bacolod City’s Ralph Sevillano and Simon Aguillon bowed out of the semifinals contention after a 15-21, 21-16, 7-15 loss to Czech Republic’s Dominik Samen and Martin Samec.
A total of $19,000 in prizes are at stake. The women’s and men’s champions will claim the $3,500 top prize each./PN
