ILOILO – The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has debunked rumors about alleged kidnapping incidents involving minors in the municipalities of Pavia, Dumangas, and Sta. Barbara, urging the public to verify information before spreading it.
Reports of suspected abductions were first received on February 17 from Pavia and Dumangas but were officially reported to the authorities only on February 19.
Viral social media posts from Sta. Barbara on February 21 also claimed attempted kidnappings, including a widely circulated video showing a minor running away from a white van.
Following a thorough investigation, the IPPO found no evidence of kidnapping. In Pavia, security camera footage and witness statements contradicted the claims of abduction.
In Dumangas, a minor reported fleeing from two motorcycles, but witnesses confirmed that no one was chasing him.
As for the video from Sta. Barbara, police determined that it depicted a child in conflict with the law (CICL) escaping while being transferred between social welfare offices. The white van and the individual seen chasing the child were identified as employees of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of Pavia, not kidnappers.
The IPPO cautioned the public about the dangers of misinformation, particularly on social media, which has contributed to unnecessary panic. It also said some minors may be fabricating stories to avoid accountability.
The IPPO has directed local police units to collaborate with schools to educate students on the risks of spreading unverified information. Measures such as increased police presence in schools and enhanced coordination with barangay officials to improve community safety are also being implemented.

Parents should guide their children to verify facts before reacting or spreading stories online.
