MANILA – Iloilo Kisela Knights renewed its mastery over Negros Kingsmen with a 12-9 victory in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) San Miguel Corporation-Ayala Land Cup on Wednesday night.
The Kisela Knights pulled off a close 4-3 win over Kingsmen in blitz game behind wins by Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Board 1), Cherry Ann Mejia (Board 3), Cesar Mariano (Board 4), and John Michael Silvederio (Board 5).
Iloilo also had a tight win over Negros in rapid game on wins by Antonio (Board 1) and Fritz Bryan Porras (Board 6) and draws by Karl Victor Ochoa (Board 2), Mejia (Board 3), Mariano (Board 4), and Silvederio (Board 5).
The Kisela Knights completed its sweep of two matches on Wednesday evening after a 20.5-0.5 manhandling of the Sunrays. The Ilonggos improved their win-loss record to 9-4.
Iloilo dominated Sunrays in blitz game, 6.5-0.5, on victories by Antonio, Fiona Guirhem (Board 3), Mariano, Silvederio, Porras and Mark Mariano (Board 7). Giovanni Mejia settled for a draw in Board 2.
The Kisela Knights completed a 14-0 score over Sunrays in rapid event with two pointers each from Antonio, Mejia, Guirham, Cesar Mariano, Silvederio, Porras, and Mark Mariano.
The Hyubs Canto-mentored Kisela Knights looks to extend the winning streak on Saturday evening as it faces Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors at 7 p.m. and Surigao at 9 p.m.
“We should not be complacent despite scoring two huge victories,” Canto told Panay News. “We are still up for challenges in our upcoming matches, especially against Lapu-Lapu and Surigao.”
The Kingsmen, on the other hand, suffered a double whammy the other night as they also dropped their opening match against the Paralympics team to drop to 6-7 win-loss slate.
Negros will try to arrest their losing skid tomorrow night as they open their double-header against Sunrays at 7 p.m. before facing the Naki Warriors at nine in the evening./PN
