YOUNG Ilonggos showed their dominance as they snagged medals in the 2017 Jiu-Jitsu Tournament (for kids and white belts) held recently at SM City Cyberzone in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
Eric Pantag took home the gold medal in the 82kg male adult category while Nasser Besano claimed the championship in 76kg adult, besting Vicente Osimco (silver) and Rovan dela Cruz (bronze).
In the 70kg male adult with gi event, Christopher Ty took home the overall title after defeating Excer Espalabras and Lorenzo Maranas. Juan Atos, meanwhile, claimed the gold in the 64kg with gi, beating John Ausente and Niño Cawaling.
On the distaff side, Dhyna Rose Gonzaga captured two gold medals after topping the 82kg and under and the women’s open weight with gi.
Gonzaga defeated silver and bronze medalists Miralyn Balboa and Zarrah Cendico in the 82kg before following the victory up in the open weight class against Rowena Balagosa (silver) and Balboa (bronze).
Still in women, Ann Rose Erebaren topped the 68kg and up against silver medalist Rowena Balagosa and bronze medalist Justine Pulgan.
Meanwhile, in the kids division, Aleyah Mendoza ruled the 24kg over silver and bronze medalists Justine Cordero and Edgar Somo, while Sean Hubag took the gold in the 21kg category.
The one-day jiu-jitsu event – facilitated by the Iloilo City government’s Sports Development Division – is part of the local government’s initiatives to discover young talents in the sport.
“We are fully supporting the jiu-jitsu sports, and we also laud the organizers for including the kids division in this one-day event,” said the division head Rommel Castro. “Sports is an effective way to encourage our youth to stay away from drugs.”/PN
